Star is one of five municipalities located in Montgomery County and boasts of having the exact geographic center of North Carolina. This is evidenced in the fact that the Army Corps of Engineers has measured (via satellite) and located the exact geographic center of our state, which is now officially marked. Being located in the center makes us easily accessible from any area of our beautiful state and beyond.

Approximately 800 residents live in our little town which has thrived on its rich history revolving around the railroad and hosiery industries. Today, the town of Star is involved in a comprehensive economic restructuring effort which focuses on cultural tourism.

The Yadkin Pee Dee Lakes Project has "adopted" Star as the pilot for its Small Town Area Revitalization (S.T.A.R.) initiative. With guidance and assistance from the Yadkin Pee Dee Lakes Project staff, the citizens have embraced the initiative and are anxiously preparing to undertake a revitalization of Star that will ensure economic sustainability for the future.

The town of Star lies approximately 1/4 mile west of the I-73/74 corridor in Montgomery County. Our climate is very mild and allows for year around activities such as golf. We have three outstanding golf courses in our county (see Local Attractions) and we are located within 30 miles of Pinehurst which offers some of the most premier golf courses in the world.

Montgomery County is also home to the Uwharrie National Forest with miles and miles of trails for hiking, biking, and horseback riding, as well as camping sites and over 46,000 acres of unspoiled nature. In addition, the Forest contains one of the oldest mountain ranges in North America.

Education

Star Elementary School is located on Main Street in Star and is a part of the Montgomery School System. Our school system has four additional elementary schools, two middle schools, and two high schools.  Enrollment is approximately 300 students from K - 5th grade.

Montgomery Community College is located in Troy and offers traditional college programs as well as several programs unique to our area and to the North Carolina Community College System. These include Gunsmithing, Taxidermy, Forest Management Technology, and Professional Crafts: Clay (Pottery).

Health Care

Montgomery County is home to FirstHealth Montgomery Memorial Hospital and has several medical offices located throughout the County.

Star also has an Emergency Medical Services (EMS) team which is a vital element of our heathcare system along with other first responders and EMS teams in the county.
